“Brazil’s response to the threat offered by Bolsonaro has been more effective than the American response to Trump,” he said, comparing the attack of January 8, 2023 on January 6, 2021.
“The great irony is that the US is punishing Brazil for doing what Americans should have done. As an American citizen, I am ashamed of this situation,” he added, in reference to Trump’s decision.
Harvard University professor made the statement during a seminar promoted in the Senate by Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP).
“The American Supreme Court disrupted the efforts to stop Trump and the Supreme Court is aggressively trying to prosecute Bolsonaro. Essentially, they are superheroes who have been standing defending democracy against Bolsonaro,” he said.
Levitsky said he has tried to understand why the Judiciary and the American Congress, besides the society itself, failed to put a brake on Trump. For him, one of the possibilities is the lack of “collective memory of authoritarianism.”
“We never lost our democracy, we have no experience with authoritarianism. […] Brazilians do not have this illusion, and this may explain why Brazilian political power has responded in a much more serious way to this authoritarian threat. Democracy cannot defend itself. It cannot be passively defended. “
