The Pro-Israel Standwithus organization condemned the justifications presented by the Special Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic for international affairs, Ambassador Celso Amorim, to depart from Brazil from the International Alliance for Holocaust Memory (IHRA).

In an interview with the Roda Viva program on Monday (11), Amorim said that Brazil was feeling “manipulated” by the definition of anti-Semitism and said there were pressures within the alliance. According to the ambassador, “any defense of Palestine” was framed as anti -Semitism.

Standwithus, which describes itself as an “educational institution about non -profit Israel,” expressed concern about the perception presented by Amorim. The organization states that the International Alliance for Holocaust Memory, created in the 1990s and to which Brazil joined in 2021, focuses on anti -Semitism and promoting Holocaust education around the world.

What Brazil does not deny the Holocaust, and recalled that the Brazilian president has already visited the Holocaust Museum in Israel 2010. As Minister of Foreign Affairs Lula, Amorim also visited Israel several times.

The ambassador argues, however, that the holocaust’s memory should not be used as a justification for what he described as “genocide in Palestine.”

Standwithus, on the other hand, states that Brazil’s departure from IHRA represents a regrettable setback in a country that “faces alarming growth in the apology for Nazism and the proliferation of neo -Nazi cells.”

The Pro-Israel Organization also asks the Brazilian government to reassess the international alliance to the Holocaust’s memory, a decision that Amorim claimed to support during the interview.
