The Hungarian Attorney General Gábor Bálint Nagy initiated criminal prosecution for suspicion of murdering a member of the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathian region of József Sebestyen, who recently reportedly conquered the death of military recruiters during forced levy. Referring to the index.hu server informs the TASR newsletter in Budapest.
The deputy spokesman of the General Prosecutor’s Office Katalin Serfőző said that the investigation would be led by the police. Investigations of facts and evidence may be carried out within the framework of international criminal aid.
The server recalls that entrepreneur József Sebestyen died in a hospital in Berehov, Ukraine, after he was allegedly brutally beaten by Ukrainian recruiters. The Hungarian citizen was detained in May and, according to his brother’s testimony, beaten him in the forest with iron bars.
The Prime Minister criticized the situation
A month ago, the Prime Minister of the Hungarian Government, Orbán, was unacceptable that Ukraine was using brutal resources against its own citizens, including the Hungarians in the Transcarpathian region. The Prime Minister in a video published on Facebook announced that the Hungarian government initiated sanctions against Ukrainian leaders responsible for the death of József Sebestyena in the European Union.
Serfőzőová told the server that, according to the notification given to the police by a private person, unknown Ukrainian recruiters under unclear circumstances during the recruitment and training for the Ukrainian army abused a man of Hungarian nationality, who probably died on July 6th July 2025. This act is currently fulfilling the facts of the suspicion of murder, she added.
According to data from the personal register, the deceased victim had Hungarian citizenship and Hungarian address. Under the Criminal Code, the Hungarian Criminal Code must be applied – among other things, an act committed to a Hungarian citizen abroad by a person who is not a Hungarian national, which is criminal in Hungarian law. According to them, the authorities refused the investigation
The Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on August 6 that the Ukrainian authorities refused to investigate the case of Sebestyena. According to him, Kiev practically acknowledged that “forced levies in Ukraine, including beating, even fatal, are institutionalized by the state, the state approved by the state ordered by the state and the state -managed procedure”.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Heorhij Tychyj still responded to Hungary’s criticism on July 11, by Budapest Manipulative abusing individual cases related to Ukrainian mobilization for political purposes, thus damaging Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. Subsequently, on June 24, he came to the emergency room to the Central Regional Hospital in Berehov, where he was diagnosed with an acute stress reaction and was transferred to constitutional treatment to the Regional Psychiatric Institute in Berehov, and he was not detected by any physical injuries. The conclusion of judicial-medical expertise confirms that the cause of his death on July 6, 2025 was a pulmonary embolism without signs of physical injuries indicating violence.
The death of a 45-year-old man was announced by his sister, who wrote on social networks that the tragedy occurred shortly after the same fate affected her next brother.
