The deputy (PL-SP) and businessman Paulo Figueiredo return to Washington on Wednesday (13) for a new round of conversations with US authorities regarding sanctions applied to Brazil and the minister, (Supreme Court).
The pair will present members of the White House and the State Department a balance of developments in the country of punishments applied to the magistrate and the implementation of 50% tariff on Brazilian imported products.
The expectation of Bolsonarists is that there is an expansion of sanctions, but for now, the recommendation will be that they do not reach either parliamentarians or other STF ministers besides Alexandre de Moraes.
According to a person with access to discussions, the next punishments under study are against Moraes’s wife, Viviane Barci. There was expectations of members of the Lula Government (PT) had also been revoked, which occurred on Wednesday with the ban on the entry of the Secretary of Specialized Health Care, Mozart Júlio Tabosa Sales, and Alberto Kleiman, general coordinator for COP30 of the organization of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (OTCA). Both worked at the Ministry of Health when the most doctors was implemented in 2013.
Chamber Presidents Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), and Senate, David Alcolumbre (Brazil-AP Union), but they say that for now, they will not defend the application of sanctions to parliamentarians, although they keep the pressure on them.
In recent days to Brazilian authorities to align with Moraes positions. Meanwhile, negotiations on tariffs to Brazil are still looked at.
“We understand that, at this moment, it would be counterproductive to apply sanctions against the presidents of the houses because there are important guidelines in Congress, which are the end of the privileged forum and the possibly the question of amnesty,” says Figueiredo.
This does not mean, however, that the presidents of the House and Senate are no longer targeted, but there will be a follow -up to find out if they will advance with the agenda that interests pockets.
“If there is no position [deles]if there is a blockade of the guidelines by the presidency of the houses, then they will be helping a sanctioned conduct [em referência a Moraes] and must be sanctioned. But we understand that Congress is advancing in the necessary discussions, “says Figueiredo.
In recent weeks, after riots by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) allies in Congress, there was a pressure and an outline according to parliamentarians involving the end of the privileged forum. This discussion, however, lost space this week to projects that try to avoid the exploitation and adultization of children on the internet.
Both alcohumbre and Motta have also stated that there is no climate to proceed with the project that can give amnesty to Bolsonaro and his supporters arrested for participation in the attacks of January 8, 2023.
The same assessment of holding new sanctions also applies to other STF ministers. The idea is to wait for what they and follow how the magistrates will position themselves in Bolsonaro’s trial.
Punished by the magnistky law, which deals with human rights abusers, Moraes was received a sanction from OFAC, a foreign asset control office, which belongs to the US Treasury Department.
Through this decision, the Trump government determines the freezing of any good or Moraes assets and can also ban US financial entities from doing dollar operations with a sanctioned person. This includes the MasterCard and Visa credit card flags, for example.
The effects of this punishment in Brazil are still under bank analysis. Boconists understand that the sanction can undermine Moraes’ transactions including reais and prevent it from having bank accounts, which would be very harmful.
Discussions made by banks and between ministers who have been reported by the press will be raised to the White House and state department authorities during the duo’s trip this week. They will argue that there is a blockade of Moraes accounts.
There is already a new trip from Figueiredo and Eduardo to Washington scheduled for late August, when they intend to bring new updates to US government members.
The two have worked since Trump’s inauguration for sanctions to Moraes. The speech taken to US government members is that the Supreme Magistrate has committed abuses of human rights and censured companies from social networks and US citizens.
This assessment was accepted by US management and has already been expressed in statements by the president and several first -level government authorities.
This week, for example, the State Department
The agency stated that the government repressed “the democratic debate” and restricted the expression of former president’s supporters (), while the courts made decisions that undermine freedom of expression.
Annual report sent to the US Congress also says that the human rights situation “deteriorated” in 2024 in Brazil.
