Among the complaints that arrived at the Observatory of Obstetric Violence, the most frequent, followed by physical violence, from October 2022 to October 2024. There are also cases where the two types of violence were present in the same complaint.
The Observatory was created within the scope of Nudem (Center for the Promotion and Defense of Women’s Rights), the Public Defender’s Office of the State of Paraná, and is collaborated by the State Department of Health. Among other objectives, the Observatory tries to reduce the underground of, creating a denunciation channel.
In almost two years of activity, the Observatory received 83 complaints in 29 cities of Paraná involving 48 health institutions, between public and private. Only concentrated 30 complaints.
Of the 83 complaints, 53 agreed to classify the episode of obstetric violence in up to four categories: physical violence, emotional violence, reproductive violence and sexual violence. Among the 53, 38 cited emotional violence.
According to the Defender’s Office, obstetric violence “concerns the various forms of disrespect, abuse, abuse, discrimination and negligence during the pregnancy-pubertal cycle, in institutional health contexts.”
“It involves from verbal, physical and psychological aggressions to unnecessary interventions or without consent, denial of access to guaranteed rights and imposition of procedures that disregard women’s autonomy on their body and reproductive process,” he explains.
An analysis of the 83 complaints – preserving the identity of the victims – will be disclosed by the end of the month by the Public Defender’s Office, which today has 14 actions for indemnity for obstetric violence in the state court.
