A Scottish court condemned a 225 -hour passenger of community work after an incident forced Ryanair to return to the original airport. The decision arises as part of a more ‘hard’ policy against behaviors considered undisciplined on board.

According to Spanish television channel, Telecinco, the case occurred in the summer of 2024 during a flight of the Irish company departed from Edinburgh, UK. The already visibly drunk passenger smoked on board, consumed his own alcohol and went threatening to elements of the crew and other passengers.

The situation classified as “undisciplined behavior” by the court led to the decision to reverse the route and return to the starting point, causing delays for 178 passengers and six crew.

Zero tolerance policy

According to the same source, Ryanair expressed satisfaction with the conviction awarded more than a year after the incident, recalling that it maintains a “zero tolerance policy” regarding disturbances on its flights. In a statement, the company reiterated that it will continue to act to combat this type of situations, ensuring a comfortable environment and without unnecessary interruptions.

The publication adds that the Irish carrier expects this case to serve as an example, determining similar behaviors and minimizing embarrassment for passengers and crew.

Fines for future cases

It refers to the magazine that, in addition to compliance with the court hours imposed by the Court, the company introduced a minimum fine of 586 euros (500 pounds) for passengers expelled for misconduct. This amount, which came into force on June 12, may increase the severity of the incident or any delays caused.

Ryanair considers that, although rare, these episodes have a negative impact on the punctuality and travel experience. Therefore, it wants financial penalties to function as a warning to potential offenders.

Clear message

It should be noted that by combining legal and internal sanctions, the company seeks to reinforce respect for the rules on board and safeguard the well-being of all. The application of these measures aims to make it clear that disruptive behaviors will not be tolerated.
