Provinces of Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi have concentrated the main prevention efforts
China has prepared today for heavy rains with the arrival of the Tropical Storm Podul to several southern provinces, leading to the withdrawal of thousands of people.
The provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi have concentrated the main prevention efforts, but the alerts remained at a relatively low level due to the loss of storm intensity after Taiwan passed on Wednesday.
According to the Xinhua official news agency, about 15,000 people were removed from coastal areas in southern China until Wednesday.
Podul reached land shortly after today’s midnight in Fujian, classified as a tropical storm-after being relegated from Typhoon-and also led to the emission of alerts in Hunan province, which houses various lakes and rivers that often overflow.
In the city of Chaozhou in Guangdong, classes and some government services were suspended, while in Hong Kong the courts interrupted the hearings after issuing the maximum alert for rain storm.
The Hong Kong Observatory indicated that the storm was moving away from the region, but that its periphery was causing gusts of wind. The population was advised to stay away from the coastal line.
There is no record of victims or damage to southern China so far.
South Taiwan today cleaned the affected areas after the storm had hit the coastal villages of Taitung and Hualien on the east of the island before heading to Taiwan narrow about five hours later.
On the island, a person was dragged to the sea, about 100 were injured and 8,000 were removed to shelters. Teams worked quickly to restore energy after criticism of a slow response to previous storms.
