United States President Donald Trump will talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Alaska, on Friday, hoping to interrupt the fighting in Ukraine, but a comprehensive solution for the war will take more time, said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“To achieve peace, I think we all recognize that it will be necessary to talk about security guarantees. There will be some conversation about… Territorial disputes and claims, and from what they are fighting,” Rubio told reporters in the state department on Thursday.
“All these things will be part of a comprehensive agreement. But I think the president’s hope is to interrupt the fighting so that these conversations can happen.”

Rubio said that the more the wars extend, the harder it is to end them.
“And even while I speak … There are changes happening on the battlefield that have an impact on what one side sees as advantage or the other. Therefore, this is the reality of continuous combat, which is why a ceasefire is so important,” he said.
“But we will see what is possible to do tomorrow. Let’s see what the conversations will look like. And we are hopeful. We want to be peace. We will do everything we can to reach it, but ultimately it will be up to Ukraine and Russia to agree with it.”

Rubio said the preparations for the meeting are going “very fast,” as it had been organized very quickly.
He said he believes Trump spoke by phone with Putin four times and “felt it was important to talk to him personally, look at him in the eye and find out what is possible and what is not.”
“He sees an opportunity to talk about achieving peace. He will get it, and tomorrow we will know at some point, as the president said, probably right at the beginning of the meeting, if something is possible or not. We hope it will be.”
