The US state of California presented plans to “redraw” the borders of its constituency on Thursday. This is a reaction of Democrats to the alleged efforts of US President Donald Trump to manipulate next year’s elections to Congress in order to protect its fragile Republican majority.
According to AFP, California Governor Gavin News said he would ask voters in his state to approve new constituencies maps on 4 November, which would effectively neutralize the changes planned by the Texas State to achieve that the Republicans have more parliamentarians in the House of Representatives.
Temporary constituency
If voters in California approve the proposed changes, temporary constituencies will be created in the state for the next two elections, and the authority to set the boundaries of the districts will then be returned to the independent commission.
News explained that temporary election districts will occur in response to the President of the United States, who ordered the reigning governor of Texas to “get (in the elections) five seats.” According to Newsom, Trump again is trying to “manipulate the system. He does not play by other rules; he does not believe in the rules.”
Aim of the changes in the constituencies
The constituencies in the US are usually “redraws” every ten years after the census. Border changes are to be based on these data – the goal is that the constituencies accurately represent the people who live there.
Democrats perceive the current efforts to change the constituency of constituencies – enforced five years from the census – as an open attempt to strengthen the Republican Party and help it keep it a tight majority in the House of Representatives in the next year’s elections held in the middle of the term of office of the current president.
A democratic resistance against the plan
In an effort to block the approval of the proposed plan, dozens of democratic deputies escaped from Texas, even though the Republicans threatened them with detaining.
Newsom is often attributed to the media to run for the Democrats in the presidential election. After their last year’s defeat in the elections, News became the most visible face of the Democratic Party and very often gets into disputes with Trump.
One of their verbal fuels also concerned raids of immigration authorities, which the Republican administration ordered in Los Angeles, where Trump sent a national guard and naval infantry in June, claiming that it was necessary to restore order.
AFP added that Newsom’s press conference was held on Thursday after trolling Trump on social networks for several days, imitating presidents an easily recognizable style of expression, including abundant, though not always logical, use of punctuation marks and Capslock buttons.
