Germany expressed his disagreement with the Israeli plan for the construction of a Jewish settlement on the occupied West Bank of Jordan. According to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this step violates international law and complicates the efforts of the two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. According to AFP and DPA reports, TASR reports this.
In its statement, the German ministry said that Berlin “clearly rejects any plans for annexation” by the Israeli government.
Violation of international law
“The construction of settlements violates international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” said the spokesman of the Ministry of Diplomacy. He added that the approved plan also complicates the implementation of a two -state solution and “the end of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank of Jordan, as required by the International Court”.
“The German government calls on the Israeli government to stop the construction of the settlements, and only recognizes the changes of the borders of June 4, 1967, on which the conflict parties agreed,” the spokesman added.
The reaction of Israel and the next steps
This construction on Thursday was approved by the Israeli farm right -wing Minister of Finance Becalel Smotrič. According to him, this is a response to the intention of several countries to recognize the Palestinian state. At the same time, Smotrič said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump agreed with the plan, although neither of them has commented on these claims.
The project envisages the construction of a new district of Ma’ale Adumim with approximately 3,400 housing units in the so -called E1 zone. This site has long raised concerns because it would divide the west bank into the northern and southern part and prevent the development of the Palestinian agglomeration connecting East Jerusalem with Bethlehem and Ramallah. At the same time, the Palestinians consider it the basis of their future state.
International criticism
There are approximately three million Palestinians and about 500,000 Israeli settlers on the west bank of Jordan.
The Israeli plan was also criticized by the United Nations, the European Union, Britain and Saudi Arabia.
The plan was also criticized by Peace Now, which monitors settlements on the West Bank, and described it as dangerous for the future of Israel and for any chance to achieve a two -state solution.
