Portugal activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism
Portugal activated the European Civil Protection mechanism with a support of four Canadair Firefight Airplanes, today announced the National Civil Protection Commander, Mário Silvestre.
In a briefing at the National Civil Protection Authority in Carnaxide, to account for the evolution of fires that plague the country, Mario Silvestre said that Portugal will be the seventh country to activate the European mechanism.
The authorities initially opted to resort to bilateral cooperation agreements with Spain and Morocco, the latter being available two Canadair, which will be in Portugal until Monday. The Spanish means supported the fighting of the fireworks of Vide and Chaves, he said.
Mário Silvestre justified the activation of the European Civil Protection mechanism with the fact that climacteric conditions did not allow some fires to overcome at night.
