Brazilian ex -president Bolsonaro is in court for the management of a criminal organization preparing a coup. His defense argues by political persecution.
The Brazilian Supreme Court will start deciding on 2 September in the case of the former extreme right -wing President Jaira Bolson. The ex -president is accused of attempting a coup d’état, TASR writes based on AFP and Reuters reports.
Bolsonaro is accused of attempting to maintain power despite the defeat in the elections in 2022 by current President Luiza Lulo da Silva. The court’s statement states that the decision will be discussed by the five -member Senate “during the extraordinary meetings of the 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th and 12th September”.
Bolsonaro is responsible for the leadership of the “criminal organization” to the Brazilian Supreme Court together with the seven of its collaborators to prepare a coup to maintain it in power after the presidential election lost. According to the prosecutor’s office, the plan was not made due to insufficient support for military command.
Is considered a victim
The former president faces a sentence of up to 40 years in prison. He himself claims to be the victim of political persecution to prevent him from running in the next election. At the beginning of August, he was placed in a house arrest for breach of court restrictions at the order of the Supreme Court Judge Alexander de Maesa. In July, the court ordered Bolsonar to carry a monitoring device on the ankle.
Moraes, who supervised the Bolsonar trial, recently imposed the United States’ sanctions accused of the judge of arbitrary approval of the prerequisite ties and the limitation of freedom of expression.
