Trump and Lukashenko discussed the release of political prisoners, the aim of which will also be a possible future cooperation between Minsk and Washington at several levels.
US President Donald Trump phoned with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on Friday. They also talked about the Friday Summit of the White House chief and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and visit Trump in Minsk, TASR reports, referring to the news of The Guardian and AFP.
The interview was also confirmed by Trump himself on Truth Social. “I had a great interview with highly respected President Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. The aim of the phone was to thank him for the release of 16 (political) prisoners,” he wrote.
Are negotiating on the dismissal of prisoners
He revealed that Minsk continued negotiations on the release of approximately 1300 people. At the same time, Trump confirmed that during the interview there was also talk of the upcoming summit with Putin, adding that he was looking forward to a personal meeting with Lukashenko in the future.
The Belarusian state news agency Belta later informed that Lukashenko invited Trump and his family to visit Minsk and accepted the invitation. At the same time, leaders discussed bilateral relations and war in Ukraine. AFP recalls that Belarus supports Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and enabled the Russian army to use its territory as the first wave of attacks at the beginning of 2022. At the end of June Lukashenko, at the request of Trump, released more than a dozen political prisoners, including a leading opposition representative Siara Cican.
