With the coastal beaches increasingly full during the summer, many Portuguese are looking for quieter alternatives to cool off. And, hidden in the north of the country, there is a river beach that is already described as a “mini paradise” by those who visit it. Far from the best known tourist itineraries, this destination offers calm waters, mountain landscapes and a rare quiet.
The secret is stored between the mountainous vegetation, in a scenario that seems to be done to turn off the world. The natural surroundings remain practically untouched, and the place is pointed by several visitors as one of the most beautiful corners in Portugal.
A RECRETE
Part of the charm is on the arrival itself. To access the beach, it is necessary to travel a dirt rail with about one kilometer. The path requires some effort, but it pays out with stunning views of the valley and the river that crosses it.
By car, the route leads to a small village where it is possible to park. From there, the adventure is on foot, in a path that already prepares the spirit for the tranquility it expects at the end.
Where silence sends
Unlike many more affordable river beaches, here the influx is reduced. It is precisely this limitation of access that keeps the place preserved and away from the crowds. “It’s an almost untouched place, with a natural surroundings that invites silence,” describes one of the videos of the content creator @viajar_emportugal.
No bars, but with peace
There are no coffees, terraces or support infrastructures, so it is advisable to bring water, food and sun protection. For many, this absence of amenities is precisely what makes the environment so special, reinforcing the feeling of isolation.
The name worth the trip
This refuge is called Mexico Fluvial Beach and is in Albufeira da Caniçada, in the parish of Cova, municipality of Vieira do Minho. Integrated in Peneda-Gerês National Park, it is fitted to the mountainous landscape of the Cávado River, creating a postcard scenario.
According to the official website, Albufeira itself is considered a high landscape value zone, with several close attractions, such as the São Bento da Porta Sanctuary and waterfalls accessible by marked rails.
