The US president’s wife raised the issue of the suffering situation of children affected by the war in Ukraine in a personal letter to the Russian president. According to two White House officials, he handed the letter himself during his talks with the Russian leader in Alaska.
Melania Trump, who is of Slovenian descent and did not participate in the trip, did not make a public statement. US officials did not disclose the exact content of the letter, but said it specifically referred to kidnapping children from Russia. The existence of the letter had not been known to date.
One of the most sensitive issues of war
The issue of children is an extremely sensitive point in the Ukrainian crisis. Kiev has denounced the forced transport of tens of thousands of children to Russian territory or areas under Russian occupation as a “war crime” that meets the definition of genocide under the UN Treaty.
For its part, Moscow argues that it has been carrying children “to protect them from a war zone”. However, the United Nations Human Rights Office have pointed out that millions of Ukraine children have suffered serious violations of their rights since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.
