At the first meeting with US President Donald Trump since the beginning of the war, Vladimir Putin signaled a willingness to end the conflict in Ukraine.
According to revelations of Reuters and from New York Timesthe Russian leader would have conditioned the peace to Kiev’s recognition of Russian sovereignty about Donetsk and Lugansk, areas currently under occupation in the East Ukrainian.
The proposal, presented in (15), represents the first formal gesture of ceasefire directly attributed to Putin since the invasion started in 2022.

Sources close to negotiations indicate that Kremlin would be prepared to retreat from other regions under military control, which total about 20% of the Ukrainian territory, provided that the two Donbass provinces, historically associated with pro-Russian separatist movements, remain under Moscow domain.
Zelensky “needs to make the deal”
The US President confirmed the proposal in an interview with Fox Newsand said he already communicated the offer to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Commenting on Kiev’s position, Trump suggested that the country accept Putin’s terms.
“Russia is a great power and they [ucranianos]no. Make the deal. You need to make the deal, ”said Trump. Zelensky, however, has reiterated in recent interviews that will not accept to give up any Ukrainian territory to Russia as a condition for peace.

Resumption of dialogue between USA and Russia
The meeting between Putin and Trump, held in Anchorage, Alaska, lasted about three hours and was marked by exchanges of compliments and diplomatic signs, despite the absence of a ceasefire agreement.
Putin classified the dialogue as “constructive” and said he saw in Trump “the genuine desire to understand conflict.” He also said he hoped that Russian concerns will be taken into account and that the meeting may be a starting point to restore relations between the two countries.
“All fundamental causes must be eliminated. I agree with Trump that Ukraine’s safety should be guaranteed,” said Russian leader.

Trump, in turn, stated that there is still no consensus on the end of the war, but that the two presidents “agreed in most points” and classified the conversation as “very productive.”
