British Prime Minister Keir Strmer said he welcomed the opening of the United States to provide security guarantees to Ukraine as part of any agreement to interrupt the war after talking to US President Donald Trump and other European partners on Saturday (16).
“This is important progress and it will be crucial to turning back,” Starmer said in a statement.
The, issued on Saturday morning (16), also stated that the next step should be, this time with the participation of the Ukrainian President.
The statement, however, did not mention Trump’s appeals for a “peace agreement.” The US President wrote in Truth Social that this would be the best way to end the war in Ukraine, instead of a ceasefire agreement, which, he said, may not “support himself” in comments that signaled a reversal of his own position.
“The leaders grew President Trump’s efforts to interrupt the killing in Ukraine, end Russia’s war of aggression and achieve just and lasting peace,” the European statement says.
