The Mêda City Council has requested the Government to declare calamity in the county, due to fires that have devastated the region since Wednesday.
The House of Mêda asked the government to declare the calamity situation in this northern guard district, face “to the disaster” caused by the fires that triggered this week and remain active.
“Mêda has been subtracted from enormous forest, wine and agricultural potential. It is necessary for the government to declare the calamity situation for our territory and create direct support mechanisms to our farmers, entrepreneurs and civil society in general,” said the vice president of the House, César Figueiredo, in statements to Lusa.
The fire entered the territory of the municipality of Meda on Wednesday, coming from the municipality of Trancoso. Lamenting that for three days the county was ‘forgotten’, the mayor defended The need to quickly compensate for affected people.
“Millions are invested in civil protection and we have been with the pennies, which is what we have now,” said the mayor, who is also an agricultural owner and winemaker producer, adding that the City Council has already begun to ascertain the damage caused by the flames for the citizens to be “quickly” offset, “with objective, concrete supports.”
“People are full of subsidies and politicians in Lisbon have to realize that these people need help already, because the future is dramatically drained for many Medenses,” he said.
For, he lamented, “a lot of people lost what he loved throughout their lives, it was absolutely nothing, without vineyards, pastures, olive groves, animals, agricultural implements and other goods.”
César Figueiredo also said that, also due to the fires, the county’s headquarters is partially without electricity.
“There is no electricity in various parts of the city and there have been more pronounced energy breaks in certain areas of the way,” said the vice president of the City Council.

“There is an active front towards the city of Mêda, another, very large, in the area of Fonte Longa, which can continue to the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, and one in Longroiva, the area of largest wine power in our county,” specified the mayor.

O (Guarda District) then joined the territory to the fire that broke out on Wednesday in Sátão (district of Viseu) and, on Friday, became one, which spread to 11 municipalities of the two districts.
The 11 municipalities are: Sátão, Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira, Penedono and São João da Pesqueira (district of Viseu); Aguiar da Beira, Trancoso, Algodres, Mêda, Celorico da Beira and Vila Nova de Foz Côa (Guarda district).
