Violent incidents broke out for a second consecutive night in the anti -government protesters clashed with supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Police intervened dynamically to dismantle the crowds, moving on to dozens of arrests and arrests.
Demonstrations, which have shocked Serbia in recent months, were triggered by the tragedy of November 1, 2024, when the collapse of a train station claimed 16 people. The accident was attributed to endemic corruption, turning mourning into social anger.
The situation was again escalated this week, when teams of SNS supporters – designated hoodlums – attacked protesters, with both sides conquering for escalation.
On Thursday, tensions were moved to northern Serbia, with protesters attacking the SNS offices in Novi Sad. They broke glass, threw furniture and objects on the street, and fired eggs and paints at the entrance of the building. “It’s over,” they were shouting in Dance, denouncing the 13 -year -old rule of the president.
The mobilizations have become strongly political, with protesters calling for early elections. Vucic, however, rejects the request, accusing foreign forces of conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the country.
Serbia seems to be now in the orbit of prolonged political crisis, as social indignation meets the determination of a government that does not appear willing to retreat.
