Spain is facing a three -week wave of heat. Fires in the north and west of the country have caused the closure of roads, iron lines and extensive army mobilization.
Spain has been plagued by a wave of heat for three weeks, and firefighters have continued to fight fires in the northwest and west of the country. The government also deployed army units in Madrid to help extinguishing them, reports on Sunday, according to the AFP report.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he had organized a “coordination meeting” on Saturday, while France and Italy sent a aircraft to help the fires near Salamanca.
“The government continues to work to combat fires by all available means,” Sánchez wrote on the X platform.
The most serious forest fires were recorded in the northwest and west of the country, namely Castile and Leon, Galicia, Asturia and Extremadura.
Closed the roads
Approximately ten roads, as well as the railway line between the metropolis of Madrid and Galicia, remains closed throughout the country. The emergency services in Galicia have shown warning reports in which they called on the inhabitants of dozens of cities to take precautionary measures, did not approach the fires of the affected areas, did not travel, if not necessary, and were in the interior.
Around 3,500 soldiers from a special unit for emergencies have been deployed throughout the country, AFP writes. In Spain, the fire extinguishing is essentially the responsibility of individual regions, while the central government intervenes only in the case of extensive disaster. The country is expected to remain in a state of emergency before the heat until Monday, as extreme temperatures have significantly increased the risk of forest fires.
Smoke from forest fires in Spain and neighboring Portugal has already reached the United Kingdom, the meteorological office reported there. Since the beginning of the year, more than 157,000 hectares of forests have been laying in Spain, according to the map of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).
