It will grant small areas occupied in, while Kiev in turn will grant parts of its eastern territories, which Moscow failed to conquer. In this context, are the peace proposals discussed between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at the Alaska Summit, according to his sources.
This news became known the day after the US president’s meeting with his Russian counterpart. The first meeting between the two leaders had between them after the start of the war.
The forthcoming meeting
Volodimer Zelenski will travel to Washington on Monday to discuss with Donald Trump a possible resolution of the war, which began by Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
Although the ceasefire of fire, which the US president so wished, he said in an interview with Fox News that he discussed with his Russian counterpart about the transfer of territories and security guarantees for Ukraine. The US president also noted that he and the Russian president “have been largely agreed”.
“I think we are very close to a deal,” he said. “Ukraine must agree. Maybe they say no, “he added.
Updates by Trump
The two sources who spoke to Reuters reported that their knowledge of the proposals discussed between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin comes mainly from discussions of European leaders with the American and Ukrainian side. They themselves pointed out that they do not know the full plan for peace.
It was not immediately clear if the Russian president’s proposals were an initial move that served as a starting point for the negotiations, or a final offer that was not subject to further discussions.
The challenges for Ukraine
From what has been known about the agreement so far, several points seem to be significant challenges for the Ukrainian government.
Vladimir Putin’s proposal excludes a ceasefire until a complete agreement is reached. This is an obstacle to Volodimir Zelenski’s main demand, as his country is affected daily by attacks by drones and ballistic missiles.
Still, Kiev should be completely withdrawn from the eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. In return, the Russian side will “stop” in the southern areas of Herson and Zaporizia.
However, Ukraine has already rejected any retreat from Ukrainian territory, such as the Donetsk region. There the Ukrainian troops have been fortified, and according to Kiev, the area is an important defense structure for the prevention of Russian attacks inland.
What is Russia’s willing to give and what not
P, which he has occupied in northern parts of the country, Sumi and Harkov, are Reuters. Moscow holds about 440 square kilometers of total areas of these areas, according to the Ukrainian Deep State Mapping Program.
Ukraine also controls about 6,600 square kilometers of Donbas, which includes Donetsk and Lugansk, claimed by Russia.
At the same time, although it has not yet been confirmed by the American side, it is well known that Vladimir Putin is seeking the official recognition of Crimea, which he occupied in 2014. Of course, it is not clear whether this means recognition by the US government, or by all the Western forces. However, Kiev and European leaders have rejected the official recognition of the peninsula as part of Russia.
Russia will also demand an official regime for the Russian language in parts of Ukraine, or even the whole country, as well as the right of the Russian Orthodox Church to operate freely. For its part, however, Ukraine accuses the Church associated with Moscow of spreading pro -Russian propaganda and hosts spies. The Church, however, denies the accusations, and notes that it has interrupted all its relations with Russia.
It is worth noting that Ukraine has passed a law prohibiting religious organizations associated with Moscow, to which it considers the Church. However, it has not implemented the ban.
What did Putin expect from Alaska
Vladimir Putin might have expected to remove sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, probably for both the American side and the Europeans.
Of course, Donald Trump said he did not need to examine the imposition of compensatory duties on countries, such as China that buy Russian oil, which is subject to a series of western sanctions. The US president said he may need to do so in two or three weeks.
In addition, Ukraine should be excluded from NATO accession, although Vladimir Putin appeared to be receptive to the possibility of taking Kiev some kind of security guarantees. But this is not clear, what it means in practice, sources in Reuters emphasize.
European leaders claimed that Donald Trump discussed. He proposed the idea of a guarantee corresponding to “Article 5” outside the Alliance. In particular, NATO’s “Article 5” states that any attack on one of the 32 members is regarded as an attack on all members of the Alliance.
It is recalled that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is a strategic goal for Kiev, which is guaranteed in the country’s constitution.
Hints about the former Soviet Union
There is evidence that Vladimir Putin and Russia are seeing the war in Ukraine in the light of the former Soviet Union. Initially, it is recalled that O.
In addition, the Russian president himself, speaking after Friday’s summit, was again implied that the war has to do with the deterioration of Russia’s prestige after the fall of the Soviet Union. While in his statements he implied that his primary concern is not the ceasefire in Ukraine, but the situation in the surrounding territories, as well as the glory of Moscow.
This kind of complaints the Russian leader had expressed in 2007 at a security meeting in Munich, but also in 2022, when he attempted to justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Vladimir Putin at the Alaska Summit demanded “to restore a fair balance in the security sector in Europe and the world as a whole.” Only this could, according to him, eliminate the deepest causes of the crisis in the region.
The Russian president did not directly refer to the war. The only thing he said on the subject was that he was “honestly interested” to stop “what is happening” because the Russians and Ukrainians “have the same roots” and “for us this is a tragedy and a great pain.” The presentation of Russia as a victim of the war that began is an essential element of the Kremlin propaganda since the beginning of the war.
Indeed, the main pillar of the end of the war in Ukraine seems to be the restoration of Russia which he held during the Cold War. That is, to emerge in a regional hegemonic and global power, equal to that of the US. However, no reference to the territories that will be returned to Ukraine and the architecture of the wider area.
The end result of the Summit in Alaska and Trump’s “Yes”
The end result of Alaska’s summit was to give Vladimir Putin to continue the war indefinitely without further sanctions, pending talks on a wider peace agreement.
Donald Trump on the flight of return from Alaska, returned without the ceasefire, which he considered so critical. However, he had not imposed any consequence and had been so pleased with how things went. In fact, he succumbed to Vladimir Putin’s demand for a total peace treaty, instead of a short -term ceasefire.
The US president, however, had stated “I am here to stop the murder”, on the way to Alaska. But this seems to be still far away, since his Russian counterpart is going to continue the slaughter.
At the same time, the terms imposed by the Russian side are not likely to be accepted by Volodimir Zelenski, nor by European leaders. This is not unknown to Donald Trump, who characteristically commented that his meeting with Vladimir Putin at Alaska was “for 10”.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was once considered Trump in London, described Alaska’s summit “almost the most vomiting episode in all the miserable history of international diplomacy”.
