A public petition, with over 90,000 signatures, requires that the YouTube back back in implementing a measure that uses artificial intelligence (IA) to verify the age of users.
At the end of July, the application said it began to test the use of AI functions in the United States to find out if users are of age on the platform, based on various signs, such as the types of videos surveyed, the video category or the antiquity of the account.
The measure aims to offer “the most appropriate experiences and protections for each age,” says the platform.
However, the new Youtube AI functionality is generating great contestation, having been created a petition that already has more than 90,000 signatures due to the fear of violation of privacy of users.
Petition authors, available on the platform, fear the analysis of “their entire history of visualizations and behavior to estimate their age”, being concerned with “Mass Surveillance and Data Control (…) That violates privacy and autonomy ”.
When a user is identified as a teenager, a series of safety measures, which consist of disabling personalized advertising, activating digital welfare tools and adding safeguards to the recommendations.
The platform also warned that, If the system erroneously calculate that a user is under 18 years old, he can check his age through a credit card or an official identification documentl.
