United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that there is a “good chance of a peace agreement” to end the war in Ukraine, reiterating the pressure for Ukraine to give in to Crimea and give up NATO.
The statement was given after a White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other international leaders. Trump said he believed Russia President Vladimir Putin also wants the end of the conflict, which has lasted more than two years.
“I won’t say it’s the end, but we have a good chance to make a deal,” said Trump. “I know Putin also wants the end of this war.”

Conditions for ceasefire
The US President reiterated that his proposal for ceasefire discussed with Russia provides for the formal withdrawal of Ukraine to join NATO and the acceptance of the loss of territories already occupied by Moscow, such as Crimea, attached in 2014.
“We will have a lasting peace,” Trump said, arguing that the conflict resolution is “good protection and good security” to all sides.
“I’ve already ended six wars, but this one has greater difficulty. Still, we’ll get it. I have confidence in it.”

Zelensky, in turn, avoided directly to confront the proposed terms, but thanked the American support and reiterated criticism of the recent attacks on Russia, classifying them as “cynics.”
“We took great steps to end this war,” said the Ukrainian President. “We are happy to discuss with the United States now the acquisition of systems Patriot.”
Zelensky said the country has its own funds to buy US armaments in an effort to reinforce its defense and maintain the reaction capacity, even in the face of the possible limitation imposed by the negotiating agreement.

Press, NATO and MALTENDED
During the press conference, Trump again criticized the press, accusing the media of “dishonesty” and saying that he won the battle of narrative about previous meetings with Putin.
In a relaxed tone, the two leaders made jokes about the misunderstanding at the previous meeting when Zelensky attended military uniform.
“Today I am in a suit,” said the Ukrainian President, laughing. Trump responded with irony, ending the moment with a handshake.
