‘There is an action against Latin America, against South America,’ said Amorim

The special advisor to the president’s international affairs, and former Foreign Minister, evaluates that the tariffs applied to Brazilian products are just the “Iceberg Pontinha” of a series of attacks that the US President tends to do against other Latin American countries. For him, Brazil needs to prepare and defend itself, diversifying political, commercial partners and without accepting provocations.

Amorim also argues that Donald Trump’s government tries to inaugurate a “new division of the world”, keeping Latin and southern America under the control of. “The tariffs are the tip of Iceberg. Each day they point out the aim and shoot. It’s an unacceptable thing. There is an action against Latin America, against South America. It’s an idea of a new division of the world. They are looking for a new Tordesillas, and Latin America has to stay for them,” he said.

Celso Amorim told Young Pan That the revocation of US visas against family members of the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha is a “complete absurd” and is part of a climb of Trump. “Perhaps they are seeing this (tariffs) does not hurt enough and are doing other things, against Minister Moraes (Alexandre), and now against Minister Padilha, who is an important member of the present government. It is very serious. It is a complete absurd. Padilha has our solidarity, more doctors was very important for the country,” he said.

The former minister also argued that the best way in Brazil responds to the attacks is to defend itself and that this should occur with the diversification of markets and political partners. “Brazil has to prepare and defend itself. Obviously, we will not be taking away from anyone. The best defense is to continue diversifying the market. We have to act with wisdom, tranquility, without accepting provocations,” he said.

In addition to partnership with the BRICS, Celso Amorim highlighted the advance in negotiations with European Union, Canada, Singapore and other Latin American countries, such as Ecuador, who should meet with President Lula on Monday.
