Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington on Sunday night on the eve of a crucial meeting with US President Donald Trump, claiming to be confident that Ukraine will get security guarantees with the support of European leaders.

“I’ve arrived in Washington and tomorrow I will meet President Trump. Tomorrow we will also talk to European leaders. I’m grateful to @potus for the invitation,” Zelensky wrote on the social network.

Zelensky will meet Trump for bilateral conversations in the Oval Hall before Trump meets with European leaders.

“We all share a strong desire to close this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting,” wrote Zelensky.

“I am confident that we will defend Ukraine, we will guarantee safety effectively and that our people will always be grateful to President Trump, to all in the United States and all partners and allies for their support and invaluable assistance. Russia needs to end this war, which she began,” said the Ukrainian President.

Zelensky suggested that new security guarantees would need to be stronger than those who “did not work” in the past, citing the loss of Crimea to Russia, illegally attached by Moscow in 2014.

“Ukrainians are struggling for their lands, their independence,” he said, adding that he hoped that the US and European demonstration of strength would help “forcing Russia for a real peace.”

Previously, President Trump suggested that Ukraine would need as part of peace negotiations.
