President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defended, in a statement to the press after meeting with Ecuador President Daniel Noboa that the regulation of social networks “is the great contemporary challenge of all states”. According to the president, “our societies will be under constant threat without regulating the big techs.”

Lula said he spoke to Noboa, during the meeting they had on the morning of Monday, 18, at the Planalto Palace, about the “urgency with which Brazilian government and society have been seeking to face crime in the digital sphere.”

“Our societies will be constantly threatened without regulating the big techs. This is the great contemporary challenge of all states. Digital networks should not be lawless land, where it is possible to impunely against democracy, incite hatred and violence. Eradicating the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is a moral imposition and an obligation of the public power,” he said.

Lula did not mention US President Donald Trump or the tariff imposed by the Americans to Brazil. He stated, however, that the current global scenario is “challenging” and that there is “rivalries (which) get worse.”

“In a challenging global scenario, where rivalries get worse and multilateral institutions are threatened, it is necessary firmness in defending our independence. For Brazil, autonomy is synonymous with diversification of partnerships,” he said.

The Brazilian president thanked the “opportunity to bring two friendly countries” and said he was “very happy” with Ecuador’s support to the global alliance against hunger and poverty, created by the Brazilian government in 2024.

Daniel Noboa thanked President Lula for the meeting and argued to put the “ideological discussion” aside. Noboa was elected president of Ecuador by the right -wing alliance national democratic action.

“As nations, in recent years, we have become our back to our neighbors, and we need to end it. We need to see Latin America as a unique region, and we have a golden opportunity to make it a power in justice, dignity and offer our children a better life. This is what the ideological discussion is a page. We need to seek solutions for people, to seek to understand society.”
