Beijing (Reuters)-Taiwan is an internal issue of China, said the Beijing Foreign Ministry on Monday, in response to US President Donald Trump, who said Chinese President Xi Jinping told him he will not invade the island while Trump is in office.
Trump made the comments in an interview with Fox News, before conversations at Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Moscow war with Ukraine.
Asked Trump’s comments at a daily press conference in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.
“Taiwan’s question is purely an internal issue of China, and how to solve the Taiwan issue is a question for the Chinese people,” she said.

“We will do everything possible to fight for the perspective of peaceful reunification. But we will never allow someone or any force to separate Taiwan from China anyway.”
China considers Taiwan as its own territory and promises to “meet” with the democratic island and governed separately. Taiwan vehemently opposes the claims of sovereignty of China.
On Sunday, in his response to what Trump had said, the Taiwan Foreign Ministry said he “always closely monitors interactions between US and China senior authorities.”

Taiwan will continue to work with countries that have “significant interests” in the Indo-Pacific region to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the ministry added.
The US is the most important international supporter and Taiwan gun supplier, despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties.
China, which has never renounced the use of force to put the island under its control, regularly describes Taiwan as the most important and sensitive topic in its US relations.
