Terence Stamp, villain actor of 'Superman', dies at 87

Terence Stamp, who became an actor in the 1960s London and became known for playing the villain General Zod in Hollywood hits “Superman” and “Superman II”, died at the age of 87, his family said.

Oscar -nominated and award -winning in Cannes and Golden Globe, the actor starred in films ranging from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Theorem” (1968) and “A Station in Hell” (1971) to “Priscilla, the Queen of Desert” (1994), in which she played a transgender woman.

The family stated in a statement to the Reuters news agency that Stamp died on Sunday morning.

“He leaves an extraordinary work, both as an actor and as a writer, who will continue to thrill and inspire people for many years. … We ask for privacy at this time of sadness,” the family said in a statement.

Born at the London East End in 1938, the son of a tug operator, Stamp survived the bombing of World War II before leaving school to work initially in advertising, until he won a scholarship to study theater.

Famous for the beauty and impeccable sense of style, he formed one of Britain’s most glamorous couples with Julie Christie, with whom he acted in “far from this foolish world” (1967). He also dated model Jean Shripton and was chosen as a muse by photographer David Bailey.

After not getting the role of James Bond to succeed Sean Connery, acted in Italian productions and even worked with Federico Fellini in the late 1960s.

He moved away from the spotlight for a period and went to study yoga in India before he won his most famous role – General Zod, the Kryptonian megalomaniac leader in “Superman” (1978) and his sequence (1980).

Stamp continued to work in several films, including “Operation Valkyrie” (2008), with Tom Cruise, “The Agents of Destiny” (2011), with Matt Damon, as well as productions directed by Tim Burton.
