Without regular big techs, society will be constantly threatened, says Lula

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Monday (18.ago.2025), that societies will be constantly threatened without a regulation of large technology companies, called big techs. In a statement to the press after meeting, in Brasilia, with the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa (national democratic action, center-right), the petista said that digital networks cannot be “Land without law”.

“Our societies will be under constant threat without regulating the big techs. This is the great contemporary challenge of all states. Digital networks cannot be land without law.”he said.

Alongside Noboa, Lula claimed to want to keep cooperating in the area of public security, especially in combating organized crime.

“It is not necessary to classify criminal organizations such as terrorists or violate the sovereignty of others to stop organized crime”said the president.

The petista has already been classifying these criminals as terrorists.

The topic was approached at a meeting in Brasilia, which was attended by Brazilian authorities and other US representatives led by David Gamble, then.

Ideology in the past

At different points of the political spectrum, Lula and Noboa agreed to leave political differences aside to increase the bilateral trade flow of Brazil and Ecuador.

“Political differences should not override the greater objective of building a strong and prosperous region”said Lula.

In his speech, noboa was in the same line, saying that ideological differences “They stayed in the past”. According to him, it is time to see what is a priority for populations of both countries and work together.

On organized crime, the Ecuadorian said this is a struggle that cannot be “Fight alone”.

State visit

The meeting with Noboa was the 1st in a series of official visits negotiated in the context of the American tariff. The federal government aims to diversify its business partners in the Americas and Africa.

The Brazilian president will also receive a state visit:

  • August 25 – (Congress Party All Progressives, Centro), President of Nigeria;
  • August 28 – (Party performing goals, right), president of Panama.

This week’s Lula agenda there is also a trip to Colombia on Thursday (21.ago). In the country, the president participates in the meeting of the (organization of the Treaty of Amazon Cooperation), which will be held on Friday (22.ago), in Bogota.

At the meeting with other Amazonian countries, Lula wants to seek consensus that can be taken by the group to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change). In addition to Brazil, they are part of the organization:

  • Bolivia;
  • Colombia;
  • Ecuador;
  • Guiana;
  • Peru;
  • Suriname;
  • Venezuela.

With the trip, Lula will have spent 120 days (4 months) outside Brazil in his 3rd term.
