President Donald Trump ruled out sending American troops to help enforce a possible peace agreement in Ukraine ,.
In a telephone interview with Fox News this Tuesday morning, Trump was asked: “What kind of guarantees do you think you have, from now on, after the end of your mandate, that they will not be American troops defending the border of Ukraine?”
“Well, there is my guarantee, and I’m the president,” Trump replied.
An White House employee confirmed on Tuesday that Trump is “emphatic” about not sending American troops to protect Ukraine. But this same source added that there are other ways for the US to ensure Kiev’s protection.
The employee added that conversations about safety guarantee commitments are underway and that the details about how this will materialize will continue to be the subject of negotiations between the US, their European allies and Ukraine. Foreign leaders want to know what Trump resources will give in to ensure that once a potential peace agreement has reached, Russia is unable to reorganize and go after more territory in the future.
Trump said on Monday that he still believes that European countries are the “first line of defense” when it comes to Russian aggression in Ukraine, but the US will be involved in the security aid of the region.
