The provision of humanitarian aid has never been so dangerous, and 2024 was the most tragic for humanitarian workers – 383 people were killed, 308 injured and 125 kidnapped. Since the beginning of this year, 265 victims have been recorded among humanitarian workers and there is a risk that last year’s tragic record will be broken. On the occasion of Tuesday’s World Humanitarian Day, the European Commissioner warned for equality, readiness and crisis management Hadja Lahbib, TASR reports.

  • Humanitarian aid is becoming increasingly dangerous for workers and civilians.
  • The year 2024 was the most tragic for humanitarian workers with sacrifices.
  • The attacks on humanitarian sites violate Geneva Conventions and International Law.
  • The European Union is actively supporting the provision of humanitarian aid despite risks.
  • World humanitarian day draws attention to victims of humanitarian crises.

The European Union is one of the greatest donors of humanitarian aid in the world, but its provision is increasingly risky, according to Lahbib. “Targeted attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers, as well as hospitals, schools and other civilian objects, are increasing, while access to life -saving help is increasingly denied,” She stressed the European Commissioner in a statement.

She reminded that “War rules” laid down by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 remain in force and their violations are a crime. She stressed that without inferior to the perpetrators of the attacks, the number of victims would continue to increase.

According to her, local humanitarian workers, who allegedly make up to 90 percent of the victims of attacks, are extremely vulnerable. At the same time, Lahbibová pointed out that although the world is watching mainly crises in Sudan, Gaza Strips and Ukraine, there are a number of other conflicts and humanitarian disasters that remain out of attention.

“Humanitarian aid will remain a source of hope even in the darkest times and the EU will continue to support it unwaverly. However, I know that while humanitarian aid is essential, it is not enough in itself. To end the suffering caused by conflicts and crises caused by man, bold political management and measures are required to achieve permanent peace and protect the most vulnerable”Lahbib added.

World humanitarian day is dedicated to humanitarian workers and those who have lost their lives in work in humanitarian activities. It was announced by the United Nations (UN) in December 2008 and falls annually on August 19. This year’s theme is strengthening global solidarity and strengthening local communities.
