It is “predator, a monster on our doors” that “needs to continue eating” for its “survival”, the French president warns, asking Europeans not to be naive in one that will be “constantly a destabilizing force”.
“From 2007-2008 (when Russia invaded Georgia), President Putin rarely complied with his commitments. There has been a power of destabilization. And he sought to revise the border regime to expand his power, “Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with the LCI network.
The French president believes that “Russia has evolved into a constant force of destabilization and a potential threat to many of us.”
“A country that invests 40% of its budget in such (war) equipment, which has moved an army of more than 1.3 million people, will not become a state of peace and an open democratic system from day to day,” he warned.
“Consequently, and for his own survival, (Putin) he needs to continue to eat. This. And so it’s a predator, it’s a monster on our doors. I’m not saying that tomorrow it is France’s turn to be attacked, but it is finally a threat to Europeans (…) and we must not be naive, “he said.
In another interview with the NBC News network, Emmanuel Macron did not hide his pessimism for the possibility of reaching a peace deal.
“When I look at the situation and the facts, I don’t see President Putin wanting peace now, but maybe I’m overly pessimistic.”
