United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, accepted during the Summit in Alaska last Friday that security guarantees for Ukraine be granted as part of any peace agreement.

“In a very significant step, President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine, and this is one of the key points we should consider, and we will be considering this at the table, also who will do what essentially,” Trump said at the beginning of conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. “I believe the European nations will assume much of their weight. We will help them and we will make it very safe,” he said.
