USP is the best university in Latin America

Academic Ranking of World Universities is led by Harvard, followed by Stanford and Mit

USP (University of São Paulo) is, for the 3rd consecutive year, the best University in Latin America, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities) released on the last Friday (15th) by the Chinese consultancy Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

Until 100th place on the list, universities are classified individually. From the 101st, the institutions are grouped. A is the only Latin American in the range from 101st to 150th place.

More than 2,500 institutions were evaluated, of which 1,000 were classified. Among them, 18 are Brazilian.

The first 10 places are occupied only by universities of English -speaking countries. Top 3 is all American, led by the 23rd consecutive year by Harvard University. The educational institution is followed by Stanford and Mit (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Following are Cambridge (United Kingdom), Berkeley (USA), Oxford (United Kingdom), Princeton, Columbia (USA), Caltech (USA) and Chicago University (USA).

The university university is better positioned is the Paris-Saclay, France, in 13th place.

In addition to USP, 17 other Brazilian universities entered the list. In Group 401-500 are UNESP (Paulista State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho) and Unicamp (State University of Campinas). UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais) and UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) appear in Group 501-600. UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) and UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) are from 601st to 700th places.

USP is the best university in Latin America

In Group 701-800 are UFPR (Federal University of Paraná), UFSM (Federal University of Santa Maria), Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo) and UnB (University of Brasilia). UFSCar (Federal University of São Carlos) and UFV (Federal University of Viçosa) appear in Group 801-900.

From 901 to 1,000 are UFBA (Federal University of Bahia), UFC (Federal University of Ceará), UFPel (Federal University of Pelotas), UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) and UERJ (Rio de Janeiro State University).

In addition to Brazilian institutions, only 3 other Latin American countries appear on the list. The University of Buenos Aires is in the 201-300 group; The Universidad Catholic Pontifical of Chile and the Universidad de Chile appear in Group 501-600. Already UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) and IPN (National Polytechnic Institute), both in Mexico, are in the groups 201-300 and 501-600, respectively.

The Arwu 2025 evaluates over 2,500 universities and lists the best 1,000 based on objective criteria related to research and academic prestige. Indicators include Nobel Prizes and Field Medals received by alumni and teachers, number of highly cited researchers, publications in scientific journals Nature e Sciencearticles indexed on web of science and performance to happen adjusted to the size of the faculty. For institutions aimed at humanities and social sciences, the weight of scientific publications is redistributed.
