President of the Republic reported the measures that his government has adopted to protect Brazilian workers and companies because of the United States tariff of Donald Trump
The president called the president of France, this Wednesday (20), in the morning. The conversation lasted almost an hour. The information was confirmed by the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic (Secom). Lula told Macron that he repudiates the “political use of commercial tariffs against Brazil”. The Brazilian president reported the measures that his government has adopted to protect Brazilian workers and companies because of the tariff imposed by the president of the United States ,. Secom reported that Lula also reported Macron about the appeal Brazil presented to the World Trade Organization (WTO) against what it called “unjustified US tariffs”.
“Even without recognizing the legitimacy of unilateral instruments used by the United States, such as Section 301, President Lula commented on the clarifications presented by his government,” said Secom. The secretary also stated in the note that “Brazil will continue to work to complete new trade agreements and open markets for national production.” “In this sense, the conclusion of the Mercosul-EFTA agreement and the priority that has conferred on negotiations with new partners, such as Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia. Macron and Lula have committed the dialogue with a view to signing the European Mercosur-Union Agreement this semester, during the Brazilian presidency of the bloc,” he said.
Lula and Macron also “reaffirmed intention to promote greater cooperation between developed countries and the global south, in favor of commerce based on multilaterally agreed rules,” according to the note. The Brazilian president has even reported Macron that the defense of multilateralism, something he has been emphasizing in his international travel in recent months, will be one of the main themes of the BRICS virtual summit in September.
This is one of the calls the president made this week to seek to reinforce the image that the country is not isolated globally, even in the face of the tariff imposed by the US government to products imported from Brazil.
