CEO of COP30 said ‘the US became a box of surprises’

The president sent an invitation letter to the counterpart, to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change of 2025 (), but there has been no response so far, according to COP30 CEO Ana Toni. “We are doing a lot of multilateral meetings and US have not appeared in any of them,” he said, adding that the US has become a box of surprises and that the problem involves not only climatic affairs, but also of multilateralism itself.

Toni estimates that the problem of multilateralism should influence COP30, which is not isolated from geopolitics. “Every COP has its challenges, but in the case of COP30 all former ministers of other COPs say it’s true the geopolitical problem, before it was just perception, and now it’s true,” he says.

The United States has decided that they will leave the Paris agreement for the second time, but the formal exit should take place only in February 2026, Toni added.

China

It has been very consistent, participated in all COP meetings, according to Toni. She adds that there is a fluid debate between Brazil and China, and that President Lula also made a letter to COP30 to homologist XI Jinping – in this case, Toni did not say whether the Chinese president responded to the letter or not.

The COP30 CEO also states that China prepares to reverse the country scenario that most emits pollutants at the moment (historically the US). According to her, the Chinese realized that combating climate change brings economic advantage. The statements were made at the Climate & Impact Summit Latin America event, promoted by the Financial Times.
