NATO fighters on standby: Russian drones approached the Romanian border

This is the first intervention in the new mission to strengthen the protection of the southeast wing of NATO.

The NATO Alliance sent two German fighters Eurofighter from Wednesday night on Wednesday, Romanian airport, Romanian airport to respond to Russian drones, which approached the Romanian airspace but did not enter it. The fighters were safely returned to the base after the mission, DPA reported.

This incident was the first takeoff of German fighters within the new NATO mission aimed at protecting the southeast wing of the Alliance.

Air space support

As DPA informed, the German air force is involved in Romania’s airspace operations, which it cannot secure its own.

The operation includes five Eurofighter fighters and approximately 170 soldiers. German fighters are part of the rapid reaction unit, which is ready for deployment 24 hours a day. Several NATO Member States alternate in providing this support. The German mission started this month and should continue until March 2026.
