This call was made after a series of Donald Trump’s meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian president, but also after his summit with Putin in Alaska.
Turkey will support the peace process in Ukraine, which will be involved in “all parties”. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the head of Kremlin Vladimir Putin in a Wednesday call reported by Erdogan’s office, TASR writes, according to the AFP report.
“Turkey has since been sincerely striving for a fair peace since the beginning of the war, and this context supports approaches aimed at achieving a permanent peace with the participation of all parties,” said Erdogan’s office.
Turkey as an intermediary
Turkey has maintained a friendly relationship with Moscow and with Kiev, and since May it has organized three rounds of peace negotiations in Ukraine with Russia since May. At the same time, Turkey has long emphasized the need for the protection of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but at the same time it has not pursued sanctions on Russia in connection with the invasion, as Western countries did.
US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Greeny on Monday in Washington, after a bilateral meeting, both negotiations with several European leaders attended. Meetings in the White House occurred three days after Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska.
Discussion of security guarantees
The meeting in the White House was also attended by NATO chief Mark Rutte, who also called Erdogan during his return trip to Europe, informs the President’s office.
According to her statement, the couple discussed “a contribution to a peaceful process from Turkey as one of the most important NATO countries” and agreed to continue close cooperation. Erdogan’s office said without further details that the discussion also concerned possible sustainable and feasible security guarantees for Ukraine.
