As part of the Municipal Visit Program, the Executive of the Vila Real de Santo António City Council visited the Seaculture Production Unit, a company of Jerónimo Martins Agro-Feliment, installed in the municipality.
The investment, worth 10 million euros, represents “an important center of economic dynamization and reinforces the position of Vila Real de Santo António in the national aquaculture sector”, being considered the largest offshore production project in Portugal.
According to the municipality, the operation already generates 64 jobs and combines cutting -edge technology with sustainable practices, ensuring quality and freshness of the fish produced in the open sea, while valuing the region’s marine resources.
The mayor, Álvaro Araújo, stressed that “this investment reinforces the local economy, creates qualified employment and demonstrates the council’s bet on appreciation of marine resources.”
The unit foresees to reach 1,500 tons of gold and sea bass in 2025, with growth prospects for 3,500 tons annual from 2027. The complex also integrates warehouses, offices and a land packaging unit, allowing fish captured off the village of Santo António to be distributed to the Jerónimo Martins group supermarkets throughout the country.
The municipality also highlighted the “commitment to monitor strategic projects that promote economic development and qualified job creation” and thanked the Aquaculture director of the Jerónimo Martins group, Pedro Incarnation, for his welcome during the visit.
