Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian today (Thursday 21/8) as a suspect in coordinating attacks on gas pipelines, the German federal prosecutor’s office announced.
The detainee, Sergei K., is accused of participating in a group “who placed explosive mechanisms in Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines near Bornholm in September 2022” – according to a statement by the German prosecutors – and will be brought before Germany.
According to a statement from the German Public Prosecutor’s Office, the detainee did not work on his own, but coordinated an organized sabotage operation.
He and his associates had started from Rostok, on the northeast coast of Germany, with a sailing boat to attack, he said, adding that the ship had been rented by a German company with the help of fake identity documents through intermediaries.
