They have already burned more than 10 million acres (10,000 km2) in early 2025, a record year after the commencement of statistics in 2006, according to European Forestry Information System data (EFFIS).

The total burning area was 10,157,310 acres at noon, larger than Corsica, exceeding less than eight months in the previous 9,885,240 acres for the entire 2017, based on estimates by country provided by EFF.

During the fires of 2017, more than half of the ash was in Portugal where 119 people lost their lives.

The 4 countries that broke the records

To date, four European Union countries – Spain, Cyprus, Germany and Slovakia – have already exceeded their annual record in 20 years of recorded data.

The burned acres of 2017 (the largest for an EU country) never had such a large burnt area on the date of August 21.

Spain, which is scanned by many fires in its western part, leaving behind the four dead, is by far the most affected European Union country from fires, with more than 4,000,000 acres (4,000 km2) ashes, about 40% of the burnt.

Portugal, where three people died in flames, follows with nearly 2,740,000 burned acres, in front of Romania with 1,260,000 acres. In France, 356,000 acres of forest land became ash, mainly in Od, which was hit by a huge fire in early August.

Out -of -EU countries

In addition to the EU, Britain is already experiencing a record year, after the fires in the spring, during an early heatwave, as well as in northern Scotland in late June.

In the Balkans, Serbia has also recorded its worst year since data began to be collected.

These estimates by Effis, an index of the European Copernicus Observatory, only take into account the fires that have burned at least 300 acres.

Between the beginning of January and August 19, 35 carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted, an unprecedented level for this year, according to Effis, indicating that the annual record of 41 megatons could be exceeded in 2017.

That year, the fires caused the deaths of more than 200 people in the EU, mainly in Portugal, Italy, Spain and France.

In 2025, two people were killed by fires in Cyprus, one in France and seven in the Iberian peninsula, a temporary report of 10 dead, according to a countdown by the French Agency.
