Interventions aim to protect populations, value territory and improve quality of life, favoring natural engineering solutions and proximity interventions in articulation with municipalities.
The government will invest five million euros to rehabilitate and restore 168 kilometers of rivers and streams, which join 550 kilometers already intervened or in process, the Ministry of Environment and Energy announced.
The interventions, according to the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, quoted in a statement, are a concrete step “To return life to rivers and streams, protect populations and value the territory.”
“By investing in the health of aquatic ecosystems, we are investing in the quality of life and safety of future generations,” added the minister.
The ministry’s financing, through the climate agency, is intended for a set of rehabilitation and restoration actions of rivers and streams across the country, in the context of the strategy of the 2030-“water that unites” strategy.
In the statement it is also clarified that are privileged natural engineering solutions and proximity interventions, in articulation with the municipalities, to “Recover degraded water lines, create controlled flood zones and reduce flood and dried risks.”
The Ministry highlights the priority interventions to be funded by the rehabilitation of the Neiva River, in Esposende and Viana do Castelo; The recovery of the Poto Ribeiro, in Miranda do Douro; The valorization of the river time in Arcos de Valdevez; the rehabilitation of the rivers Diz and Noéme, in the guard; and the restoration of the Alfusqueiro River in Águeda.
In the list also the appreciation of the Lizandro River, in Mafra; the recovery of streams in Évora and Beja; the rehabilitation of the Arronches dams system; works in the coastal Alentejo; and the Ribeira do Vascão requalification project in the Algarve in a length of 60 kilometers.
NOTE THE MINISTRY THAT THE investment also represents “A decisive step in the realization of the National Restoration Plan, which is being prepared and where the Renaturaization of Rivers is included.”
The Prios 2030 strategy aims to promote the integrated and sustainable management of water resourcesreinforcing climate resilience, natural water retention and the biodiversity of riverside ecosystems, the statement states.
