Two of South America’s most traditional teams and Libertadores protagonists in recent years, facing another electrifying duel between Brazil and Argentina: River Plate and Palmeiras will face each other in the quarterfinals of Libertadores 2025.
After River’s expected victories against Libertad and Palmeiras against the university, comes the confrontation that was already foreseen since the top phase of the World Cup. Both Millonario and Verdon want to lift the cup in Lima on November 29, but only one of them will take place in the semifinals of the tournament.
The retrospective favors Palmeiras: at Libertadores, there are two wins for each side in the history between the clubs, but it was the São Paulo team who advanced in the 1999 and 2020 semifinals – just in the years they won the first two of the three Libertadores in their gallery.
The coaches of that confrontation of January 2021 (for the Libertadores 2020), Marcelo Gallardo and Abel Ferreira, the only technicians who won the competition more than once in the last 20 years.
In the River also some names of that team remain: Franco Armani, Gonzalo Montiel, Paulo Díaz, Nacho Fernández, Milton Casco E Enzo Pérez. Already in Palmeiras, follow Weverton, Gustavo Gómez and Raphael Veigaremnants of the champion team of five seasons ago.
