Thailand will be the stage at the 20th edition of the Women’s Volleyball World Cup. The competition starts this Friday (22), with an end scheduled to take place on September 7, at Huamark Stadium in Bangkok.

It arrives in the tournament in search of its first title in history. The country has four runner-up (1994, 2006, 2010 and 2022) and a bronze medal, won in 2014. Check out the ranking of all the champions of the competition:

1) Soviet Union (five titles)

The largest champion of the Women’s World Cup is the extinct Soviet Union, with five achievements. The team won the first three editions (1952, 1956 and 1960) and then returned to the highest place on the podium in 1970 and 1990.

Aleksandra Chudina, Lyudmila Buldakova and Militiya Yeremeyeva are the athletes with the most titles in history. The only Soviet to win the MVP award was lifter Irina Kirillova in 1990, as the award only began to be distributed in 1982.

2) Japan (three titles and three vices)

Constantly among the main teams of Asia, Japan is a three -time tournament champion. The country won the 1962, 1967 and 1974 editions, as well as the silver medal in 1960, 1970 and 1978.

In recent editions, the best Japanese campaign took place in 2010, when it took the bronze. In addition, in 2006, lifter Yoshie Takeshita was considered the best player of the event.

3) Cuba (three titles and one deputy)

Cuba had a gold generation in the 1990s, owner of two World Cup titles in 1994 and 1998. Previously, the country had won the 1978 edition, which took place in the Soviet Union.

After being absent in 2022, the Cubans will return to the tournament in Thailand. The team is in Group B, next to Belgium, Slovakia and Italy.

4) China (two titles and three vices)

Opening the list of countries with two titles, China won two editions in a row in 1982 and 1986. In addition, the Asian country accumulates three silver medals, won in 1990, 1998 and 2012.

5) Russia (two titles and three bronzes)

Maintaining the tradition of the Soviet Union, Russia is another two -time champion of the Women’s Volleyball World Championship. The European team became a consecutive champion in 2006 and 2010, both about Brazil.

6) Serbia (two titles)

Current champion of the tournament, Serbia completes the list of countries with two titles in history. The first of these came in 2018, when it defeated Italy in the decision by 3 sets to 2 (21/25, 25/14, 23/25, 25/19 and 15/12).

Already the second, in 2022, left the Brazilian team. Led by the opposite Tijana Boskovic, the Serbias surpassed the team led by José Roberto Guimarães 3-0 (26/24, 25/22 and 25/17).

7) United States (one title and two vices)

The only US achievement in the World Cup took place in 2014. In an edition held in Italy, the Americans beat China by the score of 3 sets to 1. The country still has two vices in 1967 and 2002.

8) Italy (a title and a deputy)

Concluding the ranking of champion countries of the women’s World Cup, Italy rose in the highest place on the podium only once, in 2002. Winner of Ligas das Nações and current Olympic champion, the team is the main favorite for the title of the new edition in Thailand.
