It approved the creation of a parliamentary front with the objective of defending and promoting the development of the rare land sector and strategic minerals in. The initiative seeks to create a regulatory framework for the exploitation of these resources, considered vital to modern technology and national sovereignty.

The proposal, authored by Senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS) and reported by Senator Hamilton Mourão (Republicans-RS), aims not only at rare lands, but also other strategic minerals used in the manufacture of batteries, semiconductors, wind turbines and medical equipment.

The parliamentary front will have a suprapartisan character and will focus on various objectives, among them:

  • Suggest a regulatory framework and a national plan for the sector.

  • Promote sustainable use of resources and guarantee national sovereignty about its exploitation.

  • Stimulate industrialization and research in the country, reducing external dependence.

  • Monitor public policies research, innovation and inspection.

The request for the creation of the front highlights the current global dependence of the, which dominates most of the production and refining of these minerals. Brazil, despite having robust reserves, does not yet significantly invest in exploration.

With the approval in plenary, the parliamentary front now goes to promulgation and may officially start its activities.
