On Sunday (17), the boy arrived unconscious to the hospital, taken by stepfather Richard da Rosa Rodrigues, 23. He had bruises on his back, chest and even a bite on his face. The medical team tried to revive it for more than 40 minutes, but the death was confirmed at 2:24 pm.

The stepfather was arrested in the same day and had the arrest converted into preventive after custody hearing. The mother of the child, six months pregnant, was released through precautionary measures. The Public Prosecution Service of Santa Catarina (MPSC) said it will investigate possible institutional failures and hold those involved.

Accounts of neighbors reinforce the suspicion of violence. According to information from the ND+website, a resident said that, hours before death, the boy tried to ask for help, pointing to the belly and lowering himself in pain. Shortly thereafter, the stepfather took him back home. Later he returned with Moses unconscious in his arms, asking for help.

The child had passed the UPA on Saturday (16), the day before death, due to flu symptoms, but was released. Months earlier, in May, he had been admitted to the Joana de Gusmão Children’s Hospital with bruises on his face, abdomen, legs and feet. At the time, the medical team notified the protection agencies, classifying the case as “abuse syndrome.”

The preliminary report of the Forensic Medical Institute confirmed multiple body injuries compatible with aggression. The case is still under investigation by the Child Protection Police, the adolescent, the woman and the elderly (DPCami) of Florianópolis.
