US Embassy criticizes Moraes after threat to banks

Diplomatic representation considers the minister’s “fundamentally wrong” statements and cites “judicial abuse”

It reacted on Thursday (21.2025) to the statements of the Minister of (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes that they comply with US determinations related to the sanctions of the magnitsky law. The note was released by the press office.

Diplomatic representation classified the magistrate’s threats as “Fundamentally wrong” And said that the lines of Moraes “Reflect a worrying pattern of abuse of judicial power” and get up “Serious concerns about the misuse of the judicial authority for personal purposes”. The statement questions: “Will Brazil’s elected leaders act decisively to oppose this situation?”

Moraes, on July 30, told the International News Agency Reuters on the 3rd (19.ago) that Brazilian banks “They can be penalized internally” if they freeze actives in the country in response to US orders. The minister argued that such institutions “They cannot apply the law internally”.

The government of the president of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), reacted by calling Moraes of “Toxic for all legitimate companies” seeking access to US markets.

Global Magnitsky law allows sanctions against foreigners responsible for serious human rights violations. Moraes was included in the list in January, as a form of retaliation for his performance as a rapporteur of the process that judges the former president (PL) for attempted coup.
