Novara – top sprinter Jasper Philipsen opened Vuelta a Espana with a confident victory on the first stage. The Belgian Alpecin professional won the mass sprint on Saturday at the start in Italy after 186.7 km from Turin to Novara east of Milan and secured the red jersey of the overall leader on the Spain cycling tour. The Briton Ethan Vernon (Israel) was second ahead of Orluis Aular (Movistar) from Venezuela.
