The resignation of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Caspar Veldkamp, after the government blocked its proposal to adopt, has shaken the political scene in the Netherlands on Friday. After the announcement of Veldkamp, a member of the New Social Contract (NSC) party, the three ministers – inner, health and education – and four state secretaries of the same training have presented their resignation.
The situation is unprecedented and complex and shows internal disagreements around Israel. The Executive is acting, and in a minority, he retired to his party for Libertad (PVV) of the original coalition composed of four right -wing groups that headed. The remaining three continue to the next elections, scheduled for October 29, but the trio has broken.
While he has been on the front of exteriors, Veldkamp has been modifying his position towards Israel. He took possession in July 2024, and after opting for diplomacy, when he, resuming bombings, first summoned the ambassador. Then he asked for an EU investigation into them, and only at the end of last month he proposed sanctions.
Veldkamp, who is a diplomatic and has been ambassador to Tel Aviv, has been trying to harden the official position of the Netherlands to Israel. At the beginning of the war in Gaza, he opted for dialogue with the Hebrew State. Now I wanted to take new measures “in relation to what is happening in the city of Gaza and”. But it has been braking dry. The response of the rest of the government, where the Popular Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVDs) and the Camosino-Ciudadano (BBB) remains, has been blocking towards its proposals, and he has said that he felt “too limited” to mark the course “which I consider necessary.” Then, he has left home to, as he explained, to write his “letter of resignation”.
Although on Thursday Veldkamp already received the rejection of the rest of the Council of Ministers, he presented a plan to prohibit commerce with the Dutch scale with those in the occupied West Bank. He did not obtain the necessary support, and the left opposition recriminated the lack of muscle and results. Now, they criticize both from the VVD and by the BBB, which have described as “irresponsible” further weakens a acting government.
