Want to escape the confusion on the beach? This rail in Portugal has been awarded 7 times as the best in the world

Portugal has beaches for all tastes, but it is not always easy to escape the summer crowds. There is, however, a track in the north of the country that has become an alternative of nature and adventure, adding international awards and attracting visitors from around the world.

A path that adds international distinctions

According to the website of the Paiva’s walkways were elected, for the seventh time in a row, as the best attraction of adventure tourism in the World Travel Awards 2024. The prize confirms the notoriety of this route, which has exceeded the 1.5 million visitors since the inauguration in 2015.

The rail is about 8.7 kilometers and accompanies the left bank of the Paiva River, connecting the river beach of the Areinho to Espiunca. The challenge may vary: who begins in Teninho soon faces a demanding climb, while who comes from Espiunca finds a more affordable route.

Between waterfalls, throats and a giant bridge

According to the same source, along the way it is possible to observe places of great natural interest, such as the waterfall of the Aguieiras, the throat of the Paiva and the transparent waters of the river.

Another highlight is the 516 Arouca Bridge, considered the largest suspended pedestrian bridge in the world, 516 meters long and 150 meters high, according to Ponte 516 Arouca website. Access to walkways does not include bridge entry, and you need to purchase separate ticket for this visit.

A resilient route after the fires

Paiva’s walkways have already faced several challenges. Fires in 2015, 2016 and 2024 affected part of the structure, forcing reconstructions. In September this year, a fire destroyed two kilometers from the route, including the staircase near the beach of Arreinho.

According to Lusa agency, the mayor of Arouca, Margarida Belém, stressed that the rapid reconstruction is critical to the local economy, given the impact that the rail has on tourist attraction.

Partial reopening and planned works

After security assessment, the section between Espiunca and Vau was reopened, about four kilometers. The works to recover the burned segments start in January 2025, and the conclusion is expected in April. Even with reduced route, the experience continues to provide contact with biodiversity and the unique geology of UNESCO’s world geopark Arouca.

A destination that projects Portugal

Since 2016, Paiva’s walkways have won more than 20 international awards. These include the distinctions that put them side by side with renowned attractions such as the Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica, or the Clymb Abu Dhabi complex.

This recognition reinforces Arouca’s image as a destination of nature and adventure, valuing sustainable and resilient tourism.

An experience for all senses

Making this rail is not just walking over wooden walkways. It is to feel the sound of the river, to observe the diversity of the fauna and cross landscapes shaped by time. It is, above all, to live an authentic piece of Portugal, where nature and local culture meet.
